Karma is Kind

Occasionally, after a long night at work I will pick up some fast food on the way home. My rationalization for this is that by the time I pump and then get something around, over an hour will have past. That makes it really late and long between meals. Besides, the last thing I really want to do after serving people food all night is serving myself. I only stop when I don't have leftovers or something quick in the fridge.

Friday night was one of those nights. I had gotten up early with Aveline that morning and had only eaten one meal that day. By the time I left the restaurant, it was 11:30pm. I was hungry and tired. I decided to stop at McDonald's on the way home.

I pulled into my neighborhood restaurant 5 minutes before closing. As I eased into the drive-thru line, a white sedan approached. They had come in a different entrance than I had, one that did not allow easy access to the drive thru lane. The car edged toward my front, as if asking to be let into line. I hesitated. A year ago, after a long night at a Reds game, Dan, some of our friends and I stopped at a Wendy's a few minutes before closing. A red truck similarly edged in, so I allowed it. When I pulled up to the speaker to place my order for a delicious Frosty, the person told me they were closed. That red truck was the last order of the night. I thought about my bad luck after being nice last summer. I was really hungry and I did not want to be the odd car out tonight. I pushed the unpleasant memory out of my head and motioned for the sedan to take the spot ahead of me. He gave me the obligatory "thanks" wave and slipped into line.

I was able to order my cheeseburger. So did a few cars behind me. When I approached the first window, I handed my money to the cashier. She waved me off. Perplexed, I asked her why I did not have to pay. She grinned and explained that the man in the white car paid for my meal. It seems he felt grateful that I had showed him courtesy when I could have easily ignored him. Smiling, I thanked her. I waved through my windshield to the generous driver. He waved back as he drove off of the lot.

It was nice to have karma go my way. Maybe if I do more nice things, karma will continue to be nice to me.

Wow, that's some Instant Karma! Cool! Have you watched that new show with Jason Lee? I think it's called My Name is Earl. It's funny and all about fixing his karma.
