If at First You Succeed, But Subsequentially Don't....
Aveline and I were playing with a shape sorter this morning. She is starting to grasp the concept of different shapes. She grabbed one of the circles and tried to stuff it into the square hole. It wouldn't go. Aveline pursed her lips, and shifted the circle to the triangular hole. Again, no luck. She then moved the blue circular piece to the round whole and it slid easily into the container. Her hazel eyes lit up and she applauded her achievement. Looking down at the remaining shapes she chose another circle. This time she went straight for the round hole. Pleased with the results, she immediately grabbed the last circle and effortlessly placed it in the round hole. Wanting to continue her success, she began searching through the pile of plastic shapes. She opted for a square this time. She took the green plastic piece and automatically shoved it into the circular hole. It would not fit. She furrowed her brow and tried to force the piece with no avail. She dropped the square and placed her hands on her hips. After a moment of contemplation, her brow relaxed and she quickly grabbed the lid of the shape sorter. She lifted the lid with her left hand while she overturned the container with her right. Out tumbled the three cooperative circles. Satisfied, she righted the container, replaced the lid and automatically reached for one of the freed pieces. She then continued her success, placing the circular shapes into the round holes, taking a moment to bask in her accomplishment after each one. She repeated this three or four times before losing interest.

What a clever little girl!!
Way to go Aveline.
She is so smart...
she is now smarter than 1/2 of the general population. :)
That's awesome. I was also going to saw something like Josh did, so now I just have to add a +1.
Not only has she figured out that the round object fits, she can hold the image of that roundness in her mind sight unseen, remember where that shape is, and retrieve the shape at will. She's going to be a great puzzle solver some day! Good for her!
Have a great day!
We played with the shapes today...she knew exactly where the circle went, tried the square a few times, but ended up dumping them out and starting over with the circles. She was so proud of herself! (so was I)
When you think she's in a good enough mood to not be frustrated, try giving her the toy without any of the round pieces available, so she has to start thinking about what to do with the other shapes. Maybe show her the square going in the hole once, just so she won't be totally confused.
