A Remote Control is NOTHING Like an Oreo Cookie

This is the lesson I will need to teach my 15 month old daughter in the future.

Aveline has become quite good at climbing onto furniture. If I ever need to sneak to the bathroom, I need to make sure that nothing is with in reach of the couch before I go. Otherwise, said thing will surely be snatched in 3 seconds by my curious toddler. On one of my bazillion trips to the bathroom today to relieve my incredible shrinking bladder, I forgot to clear our table behind the sofa of all contraband, or anything we don't want in Aveline's grubby little hands. While washing my hands, I heard a very distinct splashing sound coming from the living room. I shuffled through the sound files in my brain, trying to match the noise with its source. It hit me in an instant. I had left my glass of water on the table. Crap! The last time I had made this mistake, I had a soggy sofa seat for the evening. I rushed into the living room, fearful she had dumped all of the water onto the couch, banishing me to the less comfortable love seat for the evening. As I rounded the corner, I was found the glass sitting soundly on the table. Aveline was instead dunking our TiVo remote into the glass with great giggles and fervor. She cackled at me when I found her and tried to splash and dunk faster.

Now my remote won't fast forward through commercials. Of all of the functions to lose on a TiVo remote, it had to be that one.

Since it's messed up anyway, you might want to try doing what sometimes works with computer keyboards. I can't promise that it will work, or that you won't be worse off afterward than you are now.

Anyway, the trick is to soak it with distilled water. Drain the water as best you can, and then let it air dry.

My kid is also fond of climbing. He has climbed onto the kitchen counter and spilled sugar on the ground, spilled everything there is off of the dining room table, and nothing is safe on our nightstands or bathroom counters.

I'm thinking it is almost time to tie the kid down.

Yummy, a remote control! Er, I mean Oreo!

The washing with distilled water may work. Alcohol sometimes works too - but test it because it can remote the labels depending on the way they're applied. Remove the batteries first, of course.

TiVo also sells replacement remotes on TiVo.com. And there are usually a bunch of them up on eBay.

Also, if the FF button is the one broken, you can use 30-second-skip to jump through the ads. Enter Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select (SPS30S) while watching a recording. You should hear three chimes. Now the 'Advance' button (looks like '->|') jumps ahead 30 seconds per press. In FF/RW it still jumps to the tick marks. The code will reset if the unit reboots, or you can toggle it off by entering the code again.

Similarly, SPS9S turns on an on-screen clock and elapsed time indicator.

Thanks for all of the advice! My husband got out his tool box and pried the thing open, blew on it and put it back together. It seems to work now. Whew!

I really want to laugh, but I know our time is coming soon. As you know chey already gets into things, but I don't have to worry as of yet, about things on tables.

She has started climbing on her toys to try and reach things though. Oye!!!

When our first grandchild was little I had to dismantle our daughter's floppy drive to get a screw out of it. Where the screw came from, we never knew. He'd seen them putting floppies in the slot ... so .....

Glad the old blow on it hi tech tool worked LOL!!

Oh yes, I've got a lot of practice diving for objects just as Cordy tries to destory them. Sometimes I make it in time, other times I don't.
